By Lexy Martin, Director Research and Analytics, CedarCrestone For the past 13 years, CedarCrestone has published a comprehensive report on HR technology adoption and the value organizations achieve from its use. To show special thanks to IHRIM for supporting us in getting so many responses from IHRIM members, CedarCrestone is providing this evaluation of a set of technologies called workforce optimization at a greater depth than will be covered in the publicly available report. The full CedarCrestone survey report covers 40+ unique application areas. We categorize these as administrative, service delivery, workforce management, talent management, social media, business intelligence, and this year, for the first time, a new category: workforce optimization. The applications in this category include: workforce planning, workforce analytics, predictive analytics, labor budgeting, and mobile analytics. These applications are not widely adopted across all organizations (17% average), but Large organizations with over 10,000 employees are the strongest adopters (22%). Dynamic Technologies for Smarter Government: Unlocking Knowledge in the Web 2.0 Age In today’s complex global environment, governments are being asked to formulate and implement policy with unprecedented speed and authority. At the same time, the general public increasingly expects greater transparency and accountability from its leaders. To respond appropriately, governments can implement plans to effectively use today’s collaboration tools, generally referred to as Web 2.0 or Gov 2.0, to improve their quality, speed and responsiveness. The objective of Dynamic Technologies for Smarter Government is to provide a starting point for public sector leaders as they evaluate and begin to embrace the new world of social networking, and online interaction and collaboration, that makes up the foundation of Web 2.0. The environment in which governments function continues to change, making dynamic technology an important element of the evolution and future of the public sector. Effecting Successful Change Management Initiatives Despite all the rhetoric, books, effort, and money thrown into change efforts, most organizational change efforts fail. Arthur D. Little and McKinsey & Co, have studied hundreds of organizations that entered into change initiatives and have found that about two-thirds fail to produce the results expected. In recent surveys, CEOs report that up to 75% of their organizational change efforts do not yield the promised results. These change efforts fail to produce what had been hoped for and yet always produce a stream of unintended and unhelpful consequences. Click here to read the article.

Gartner Says the World of Work Will Witness 10 Changes During the Next 10 Years The world of today is dramatically different from 20 years ago and with the lines between work and non-work already badly frayed, Gartner, Inc. predicts that the nature of work will witness 10 key changes through 2020. Organizations will need to plan for increasingly chaotic environments that are out of their direct control, and adaptation must involve adjusting to all 10 of the trends. Click here to read the list of the 10 changes.
The Current State of Performance Management and Career Development 2010 In March/April 2010, Hewitt Associates surveyed human resources professionals to learn about their current performance management practices and career development programs. Responses from 193 employers provide a picture of what they are doing in regard to performance management and career development programs. These survey results provide an overview of practices and prevalence in the blocking and tackling of performance management and career development. They provide comparative data to use when considering whether to modify a current approach. Click here to read the survey results.

Five Reasons HR Application Software Implementations Exceed Budget By Clay Scroggin The following list is not in any particular order. I’ve seen HR application software projects exceed budget expectations for all of the reasons listed below. My objective with this article is to provide some foresight into why a project might exceed budget and, hopefully, help you limit the chance that the project exceeds the agreed upon budget for the work. I’ve had to go to companies in the past and provide reasons why we were not going to complete a project within the budgeted expectations so I know firsthand that this is not much fun. COMING IN THE AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010 ISSUE: “NEW WORKFORCE / NEW TECHNOLOGIES: NEW CHALLENGES FOR ORGANIZATIONS Few topics are talked more about today than the sweeping changes we are seeing in the workplace resulting from the new technology and a new workforce simultaneously entering the workplace. The combination of social networking software, cloud computing, and consumer-like user experience expectations with the mobile, global, digital, multi-tasking, gaming, and Net generation is creating a paradigm shift (and divide?) for today's organizations not seen since the Industrial Revolution. In addition, this issue features our “HR Outsourcing Buyer’s Guide.” COMING IN THE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010 ISSUE: “HCM AND SUPPORTING TECHNOLOGIES ARE ESSENTIAL TO BUSINESS SUCCESS” We are living through times that will have a long-term impact on how organizations view human capital management. As we emerge (hopefully) from the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, new regulations, new business priorities, and even new human capital management models are emerging. Most importantly, the ability to quickly align human capital with delivery on business priorities is, in certain cases, becoming a necessary capability for businesses to survive. This issue examines and provides invaluable insight on how human capital management and supporting technologies can have a positive impact on business.
