Social Media is Changing What We Expect from our Leaders Social media has reached a certain stage of maturity in the business world, where we are no longer experiencing the vigorous debates about whether or not social media is a fad. It’s clearly mainstream now: one study reports 94% of corporations are now using social media in one form or another (mbaprograms.org). The disruption in the areas of marketing, PR, and communications is now widely recognized as a permanent one. But what about leadership?

CEO perspectives: How HR can take on a bigger role in driving growth
Two dominant trends are potentially reshaping the role of the HR function in the corporate world. The first relates to the rapid growth of the knowledge economy. In this environment, a committed, appropriately skilled and prudently deployed workforce is critical in order to develop new products and outstrip the competition. Second, many administrative functions that were formerly handled by HR departments, such as payroll and pensions, have now been farmed out to third parties. Indeed, research reveals that more than two-thirds of companies outsource a portion of their HR functions.

Why and When to Get Out of Spreadsheets and into HR Software And what to look for when you’re making the switch Spreadsheets have been the standard way to manage data since the 1980’s with Apple’s VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, and eventually Microsoft’s Office Suite. Today we know that, up to a certain point, spreadsheets are good enough to meet basic needs and have immediate practical value for HR. However, at a certain point, they no longer do the trick. Instead, they become a pain and a liability; fortunately spreadsheets are not the standard anymore. A recent survey shows that 60% of the Hospitality industry, 73% of the Healthcare industry, and 86% of the Technology industry currently use some type of human resource software. This shows that the majority of organizations have figured out they don’t have to use spreadsheets as a standard for managing HR. Instead, HR software has become the new standard. So, if you are still using spreadsheets to track employee data, you need to ask yourself—why? Then start evaluating when you will transition from spreadsheets to human resource software. Following are a few points to consider when deciding why and when your organization needs to make the switch. |

Project Management: Good Communication Is the Key to Management and Leadership Leaders are vital to an organization and are found at many levels. Wherever they are leaders are vital to an organization. Leaders provide direction, guidance, support, and feedback, and they make decisions. A project manager leads a team or teams of people, using the resources of the organization to meet goals that support organizational goals. Effective project management and leadership require effective communication, and these are the first questions they have to answer. |

Systems of Engagement and The Future of Enterprise IT: A Sea Change in Enterprise IT Over the past decade, there has been a fundamental change in the axis of IT innovation. In prior decades, new systems were introduced at the very high end of the economic spectrum, typically within large public agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Over time these systems trickled down to smaller businesses, and then to home office applications, and finally to consumers, students and even children. In this past decade, however, that flow has been reversed. Now it is consumers, students and children who are leading the way, with early adopting adults and nimble small to medium size businesses following, and it is the larger institutions who are, frankly, the laggards. Our initial response might be to dismiss this trend as not really relevant to the issues of business. After all, if there really were useful productivity gains here, surely we would already be investing in them. Isn’t it far more likely that this proliferation of consumer services, social sites, and interactive games is simply digital entertainment which, if anything, should be banned from corporate computing? |

The iPass Mobile Workforce Report examines mobile device preference, as well as the barriers and distractions that mobile workers encounter. Compared to last year, more mobile employees reported that they are encountering barriers to successful mobile working. And the amount of time mobile workers spend on technology distractions such as social networking is slowly trending up. The universal device has also finally arrived—the one device to rule them all—the smartphone. However, it isn’t what many thought leaders in the technology industry predicted. While the smartphone is the most often used device throughout the day it won’t replace a tablet or laptop, but it is set to replace your wallet and keys as Near Field Communication (NFC) technology ramps up. In a continuation of last year’s analysis of mobile worker health, this quarter’s report also looks at the amount of time employees spend online and for how long they typically disconnect. |

This issue will give readers the tools to decide what is right for them. Planned features include: The Keys to the Castle: Applying Technology Trends to Human Resources; Do You Need Big Data?; Think Like a Job Candidate and Supercharge Your Social Recruiting ROI; The Cloud Demystified; The Analytics Revolution; and an interview with Josh Bersin, Bersin By Deloitte, and Mark Smith, HRchitect, on the consolidation of the HR technology space and what it means. This issue will be bulging at the seams with the latest “need to know” information. If your new year’s resolution was to expand your technology knowledge, this issue of Workforce Solutions Review will be your go-to resource. April/May 2013 Issue – This issue focuses on two frequently mentioned topics in HR – Human Capital Analytics and Workforce Planning. Some may joke that these subjects share the common trait of being subjects that nearly every company talks about, but which few companies actually do. However, we hope that with a lineup of both industry practitioners from the trenches, as well as stories from some experts in analytics and workforce planning, we can help HR and organizations alike to make progress. Of course, even with great stories, case studies and examples, we still have the fact that this deals with a topic many in the HR profession avoid whenever possible, i.e., math. Who goes into HR for the math? That said, if the HR profession is waiting for all the other business functions and top management to learn to speak/understand and embrace soft HR, we have a long wait ahead of us. In fact, it likely will never happen. The language of business is not English, or any other spoken language, rather it is the language of dollars and cents, of currency regardless of country. Revenue, costs, and the ubiquitous bottom line; the ongoing search for profit is here to stay. It is high time HR stepped up to use these same tools – data, basic math and building business cases with numbers – to truly “take” their place, not with a seat somewhere at the table, but rather at the right hand of the CEO as both trusted advisor and steward of the workforce; a source of strategic competitive advantage for all companies and all industries. This issue’s articles describe how HR’s use of human capital analytics and workforce planning will yield positive bottom-line results. Book Release from IHRIM Publications “Heroic HR, a little book with BIG ideas” by Marc S. Miller is now available at www.ihrimpublications.com. HEROIC HR provides a quick, easy, lively and valuable treatise on how to ensure that the HR function in your organization is viewed as a Strategic Partner. “The ideas are particularly helpful as they relate to investing in HR technologies to drive efficiency through employee and managerial self-service,” according to Dave Ulrich, Professor, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan.
