In August 1971, during the era of vinyl recordings, one of the world’s great rock bands, The Who, released one of the genre’s great albums, Who’s Next, that included a raucous little number called Going Mobile. Forty years on, in the era of mp3 file sharing, U.S. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel is bringing a full-throated, Roger Daltrey-esque brio to his promotion of the federal government’s pursuit of mobile solutions: “Going mobile doesn’t just increase productivity but it’s a huge cost saver too,” VanRoekel wrote on the Office of Management and Budget blog in January. “Within a year, I expect the government to change the way we work—to start embracing mobility-enabling technology across the federal workforce in a coordinated way.” You can practically hear the roar of the crowd. Here are five big trends in the mobile world

Virtual Technologies: Creating Environments that Change the Way Companies Do Business Since the 1990s, enterprise has undergone an evolution that has changed the way business is conducted. Twenty years ago, nearly everyone worked in an office environment that facilitated team building, communicating corporate vision, and motivating a corporate workforce. Today, office environments are shrinking as companies rely on mobile workers and employees in offices scattered around the world to enable technology, maintain long-term customer relationships, and increase the speed to market for new products and services. The result is that many employees, partners, and stakeholders rarely step foot on the corporate campus for face-to-face meetings. An unintended consequence of this trend, however, has been the loss of business relationships that enable high levels of productivity, creativity and thought leadership that can only come through focused interaction. |

The Benefits of Data Modeling in Business Intelligence Business intelligence (BI) is critical to many organizations today. Faced with ever-growing amounts of data, the challenge is to make sense of this data and unlock information that is useful and relevant to the business. A data model is a valuable communication tool to ensure that database developers understand and meet the needs of the business in the physical database system. This white paper discusses the role of data modeling in documenting, explaining, and clarifying the output of the various components of BI. Each component has different structures and requires different approaches for the data modeler. However, with careful use of modeling tools, not only can we avoid the risks of misinformation, we can also extend the benefits of fully understanding the designs of our systems. |

The Impact of Talent Balance for Smarter Workforce Decisions The quality and quantity of talent can directly impact an organization’s efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability—attributes that are key to succeeding in a fiercely competitive business world. As technology advances and the global marketplace continues to expand, the need for quality talent is increasing. However, organizations are finding it difficult to attract and retain skilled people, and the shortage of talent is having a significant impact. How can companies assess their talent demands, appropriately balance their workforce, acquire and retain the best people, and engage them so the impact of talent is a positive one? In this paper we’ll examine how to effectively recognize the value of human capital. We’ll then analyze the benefits and disadvantages of competitive versus institutional knowledge that your employees can deliver. Finally, we’ll take a look at how organizations today can retain the right mix of internal and external talent for optimal balance. |

Workforce Solutions Review - Don’t miss the next two issues of IHRIM’s Workforce Solutions Review featuring HR Service Delivery and the Evolution of HR Technology! February/March 2012 This issue will cover a variety of the latest trends and issues in HCM service delivery from a technology and organizational perspective. Planned feature articles include: Next Generation HR Service Delivery Models; Where’s the Service in SaaS?; Building an Engaging and Compliant Benefits Administration Model – To Insource or Outsource, that is the Question; The HR Business Partner, Shared Service Centers, and Centers of Excellence; HRO/BPO Today – To Be or Not to Be?; HR Service Delivery for SMB’s, and Service Level Agreements and Measuring for Success. This jam-packed issue will also include our regular complement of specialty, department articles. You won’t want to miss this new look at an “old” topic. Plus our HR Service Delivery Buyer’s Guide. April/May 2012 The market for "integrated talent management" software continues to be open to the existing players (whom are being consolidated more and more each day.) There are vendors that market end-to-end solutions that cover most of the bases to satisfy a company's "end-to-end" talent management needs. But it’s like trying to find that perfect universal remote control for your home. It turns on your TV, DVD player, stereo and all its components, the lights in your house – room by room, and your oven. But it won’t start your car and warm it up on a cold morning. This issue looks at what organizations want and need – a complete HR platform strategy that integrates the various applications: (employee and manager self-service and all the technological support that enables HR to support the workforce and lower the cost of service delivery; time and labor and all the technologies that enable our organizations to put the right person in the right place at the right time and deliver at an optimal cost; the technologies that enable us to acquire, develop and retain talent and deliver revenue and/or profit-based outcomes; the technologies that enable metrics-based management and also contribute to financial performance improvements at the enterprise level; and, social and mobile adaptations of these that are just beginning to show enterprise value)…and, no million dollar upgrades every few year. Does this fully integrated solution exist, and if not, how can companies combine the best of applications cost-effectively and drive business success? This issue of Workforce Solutions Review can be valuable to your business. Plus the Workforce Planning Buyer’s Guide.
