Social networking sites and our lives How people’s trust, personal relationships, and civic and political involvement are connected to their use of social networking sites and other technologies Questions have been raised about the social impact of widespread use of social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter. Do these technologies isolate people and truncate their relationships? Or are there benefits associated with being connected to others in this way? The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project decided to examine SNS in a survey that explored people’s overall social networks and how use of these technologies is related to trust, tolerance, social support, and community and political engagement. The findings presented here paint a rich and complex picture of the role that digital technology plays in people’s social worlds. Wherever possible, we seek to disentangle whether people’s varying social behaviors and attitudes are related to the different ways they use social networking sites, or to other relevant demographic characteristics, such as age, gender and social class.

Healthy Mix: Social Networking and Employee Wellness Employers are embracing social media as a powerful tool that directly impacts the effectiveness of employee health programs. For employee wellness programs, which tend to be social by nature, people also are turning to social media to stay in touch, compare notes, trade personal stories and, in many cases, provide support and motivation to others. According to Tom Abshire, senior vice president of marketing and member engagement at Virgin HealthMiles, which provides technology-based employee health programs, human resource and A Healthy Mix: Social Networking and Employee Wellness benefits managers want to know where and how social networks and workplace wellness merge. They also question whether applying social networking to employee wellness programs can help employers improve overall employee health and lower healthcare costs. On both counts, Abshire says evidence is mounting that social networking has finally come of age on the employee wellness front. |

International HR Barometer 2011 Welcome to the results of ACE’s International HR Barometer, 2011. This is the second Barometer we have conducted with the aim of gauging the mood in HR across Europe so that we can draw conclusions about current issues, identify trends, and debate how to enhance HR’s contribution to business success. This time, as well as looking at the role of HR, we have also aimed to examine a key HR process: the use of competencies. Our aim here is to look at how we can achieve the maximum benefit from this widespread practice.

Global Survey: Has Cloud Computing Matured? The economic climate over the past few years had a significant impact on corporate IT operations. Investors, executive leadership and even customers were forcing businesses to “do more with less” as a standard practice. At the time, signs indicated this could become permanent – or at least very long-term – behavior. The “do more with less” attitude spurred consolidation, outsourced business processes, and an accelerated investment in technologies that shifted costs from large capital expenditures to smaller operational expenses – including infrastructure, platforms, and applications delivered in the form of services. Three years ago Avanade was among the first to conduct extensive global research that quantified the real and perceived business value – and potential pitfalls – of cloud computing as an emerging technology. This report revisits cloud to determine where the megatrend is in the adoption cycle. |

How Do Generational Differences Impact Organizations and Teams? Part 2 Generational issues in the workplace can seem difficult to manage, but these are not insurmountable obstacles. Raising awareness of generational issues on teams and focusing on productive behaviors can bring teams together and enable them to function more efficiently. In this second installment of Birkman International’s two-part report on the impact of generational differences on organizations and teams, you will discover how to bring employees and teams together and minimize generational strife, including: • Looking at sources of generational conflict on teams. • Recommendations to encourage teamwork. • How teambuilding initiatives can help.
Strategies for Project Recovery WHAT’S AT STAKE: The statistics regarding project failure are sobering. According to this survey, firms on average manage $200 million in projects each year. During that time these organizations will realize that $74 million of their projects are at risk of failing. Whether a troubled project ultimately succeeds or fails depends on the effectiveness of the actions taken to recover the project. Before these actions can be taken, however, organizations need to be able to recognize problems and prepare to take appropriate corrective measures. PM Solutions has conducted this benchmark of current practices in recovering troubled projects to help identify the factors that may lead to the development of strategies for successful project recovery.
