Regarding security-related issues in the workplace, seven of ten employees admitted to knowingly breaking IT policies on a regular basis, and three of five believe they are not responsible for protecting corporate information and devices. Seven out of 10 young employees frequently ignore IT policies, and one in four is a victim of identity theft before the age of 30, according to a global study from Cisco . The final set of findings from the three-part Cisco Connected World Technology Report reveals startling attitudes toward IT policies and growing security threats posed by the next generation of employees entering the workforce – a demographic that grew up with the Internet and has an increasingly on-demand lifestyle that mixes personal and business activity in the workplace. The Cisco Connected World Technology Report provides insight into challenges that companies face as they strive to balance current and future employee and business needs amid expanding mobility capabilities, security risks, and technologies. The findings are telling. The 2020 workplace is going to look a lot different from where we work today, as the next generation of global workers enters the workplace with expectations and demands about how, when, and where they access information. The Report shows how organizations can start preparing now to deal with the demands that will be placed on their IT and HR departments by this new workforce. How social technologies are extending the organization Companies are improving their mastery of social technologies, using them to enhance operations and exploit new market opportunities—key findings of our fifth annual survey on these tools and technologies, in which we asked more than 4,200 global executives how organizations deploy them and the benefits they confer. When adopted at scale across an emerging type of networked enterprise and integrated into the work processes of employees, social technologies can boost a company’s financial performance and market share, respondents say, confirming last year’s survey results. But this is a very dynamic environment, where the gains from using social technologies sometimes do not persist, perhaps because it takes so much effort to achieve them at scale. Some companies, respondents indicate, reaped fewer benefits and thus became less networked, while a smaller percentage learned how to deploy these technologies to become even more networked. Executives say that their companies are using them to increase their agility and to manage organizational complexity. Many believe that if organizational barriers to the use of social technologies diminish, they could form the core of entirely new business processes that may radically improve performance.

Gartner Reveals Top Predictions for IT Organizations and Users for 2012 and Beyond Gartner's top predictions for 2012 and beyond showcase the trends and events that will change the nature of business today and in years to come. Selected from across Gartner's research areas as the most compelling and critical predictions, the trends and topics they address underline the reduction of control that IT has over the forces that affect it. "The continued trends toward consumerization and cloud computing highlight the movement of certain former IT responsibilities into the hands of others," said Daryl Plummer, managing vice president and Gartner fellow. "As users take more control of the devices they will use, business managers are taking more control of the budgets IT organizations have watched shift over the last few years. As the world of IT moves forward, CIOs are finding that they must coordinate their activities in a much wider scope than they once controlled. While this might be a difficult prospect for IT departments, they must now adapt or be swept aside." |

10 Things a Performance Management System Can Do for You Why are organizations of all sizes suddenly rushing to automate their employee management processes? One reason is that web-based technology and affordable deployment options have helped this technology take off and driven organizations to rethink how they manage employee performance and workforce strategy. What Every Enterprise Should Know About Cloud Computing and eDiscovery Enterprise IT departments need guidance for deploying eDiscovery applications and for crafting Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with cloud service providers, so that new cloud computing initiatives don’t undermine the enterprise’s investments in eDiscovery. Two important trends in enterprise computing are operating at cross purposes: Enterprises are investing heavily in cloud computing. They’re renting infrastructure from cloud vendors such as Amazon.com, and they’re replacing on-premise applications with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications. By adopting cloud computing, enterprises hope to increase operational agility while lowering IT costs overall. The other trend is enterprises setting up their own eDiscovery infrastructure and processes. Instead of relying on outside consultants to find Electronically Stored Information (ESI) relevant to civil suits, enterprises are deploying eDiscovery applications in-house and conducting managing processes themselves. The cost savings can be substantial, especially since the average Fortune 500 company is facing 150 lawsuits at any time. |

Maximising the value of shared service centres through better people practices Organisations which view their shared service centres as low cost providers of low value services are likely tolerating the underperformance of a valuable people resource. As centres’ capabilities continue to evolve, organisations are potentially missing an opportunity to improve services to internal and external customers through more empowered staff. The creation and operation of a shared service centre is a significant investment for an organisation, yet the way staff are managed and motivated often reveals opportunities to increase the value of shared service centres to the business, whether located on or offshore. |
