He is known for his thought leadership, his understanding of combining and leveraging technology in new ways, and his strong knowledge of the vendor community surrounding HR technology. Nov’s reputation is “connecting the dots” between technologies to create new solutions and solve business problems. The Wire talks with Nov Omana as he moves into the IHRIM Chairman of the Board role Wire: Congratulations on your recent appointment to the role of IHRIM Chairman of the Board. You have been an IHRIM member for a number of years now. How did you first become involved with the association? Nov: Thank you. I am looking forward to the next two years and working with a talented group of board, staff and volunteers. I first became involved with IHRIM in 1988. Working in San Francisco, I was approached by Bob Stambaugh, a founder of HRSP (the organization that later became IHRIM) about volunteering to help with an HR conference. That day of volunteering allowed me to meet a number of people who remain my friends and have helped me in my career within HRIS. I joined HRSP (IHRIM) that very same day and consider it to be one of my best career decisions. Read the complete conversation with Nov Omana, IHRIM Chairman of the Board

Conducting Effective Project Meetings One of the most overlooked skills is the ability to conduct effective meeting-- and not have them be a drain on everyone’s time. You know how it goes, it’s 2:50 and you have a 3 p.m. conference call and you’re looking for anything you can come up with to avoid it, right? The problem is that most meetings are boring, only semi-productive and are often held for self-serving purposes of the person who called the meeting. And how many times have you sat down to a meeting only to find it’s a meeting about when to meet? To learn more about project management,

Part II of the study reveals a disconnect between IT policies and workers, especially as employees strive to work in a more mobile fashion and utilize numerous devices, social media, and new forms of communication such as video. The rise of the networked enterprise: Web 2.0 finds its payday Every new technology has its skeptics. In the 1980s, many observers doubted that the broad use of information technologies such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) to remake processes would pay off in productivity improvements—indeed, the economist Robert Solow famously remarked, “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.”1 Today, that sentiment has gravitated to Web 2.0 technologies. Management is trying to understand if they are a passing fad or an enduring trend that will underwrite a new era of better corporate performance.

Analytics: The new path to
value The combination of an increasingly complex world, the vast proliferation of data, and the pressing need to stay one step ahead of the competition has sharpened focus on using analytics within organizations. To better understand how organizations are applying analytics today, prioritizing their future investments, and transforming insights into action, MIT Sloan Management Review in collaboration with the IBM Institute for Business Value, surveyed a global sample of nearly 3,000 executive managers and analysts. Based on our analysis of survey results, combined with interviews with academic and subject matter experts, this study offers recommendations on how organizations can bolster their analytics capabilities to achieve long-term advantage. |

Trust in the workplace: 2010 Ethics & Workplace Survey During challenging economic times, the relationship between employees and employers is often tested. Frequently, executives are forced to make decisions that broadly affect their workforces and alter what matters in the workplace. Today’s business environment is no exception. According to the Deloitte LLP 2010 Ethics & Workplace Survey, the recession has diminished two important forms of business currency—trust and ethics.
Designing Strategic Organizations: The New Work of Executives and HR We long have been fascinated by the overlap between leadership and organization development. One of the most difficult challenges for new general managers, who have been promoted after leading functional teams in marketing, sales or operations, is to make their leadership impact scalable across a multi-dimensional organization. Guiding a leader through a significant organization design project with the goal of building new capabilities may be some of the most important and complex work that a human resource professional can undertake. It requires a deep, trusting relationship with the client, knowledge of the business, and an ability to bring broad HR domain expertise — talent, organization, change, learning, compensation and project management — to the effort.
Outlook 2011: IT Trends to Watch IT spending should increase in 2011. In fact, 55% of companies are increasing IT spending, 18% are cutting and 26% are expecting flat IT budgets. The biggest change is among those increasing IT spending 5% to 10%—this figure has risen to 27% this year. IT hiring shows signs of loosening up as well, with almost one-fourth of companies expecting to increase the size of their IT staff this year, and another 34% at least filling vacancies. A still-high 35% have a hiring freeze, though, which is nearly identical to last year. But unlike last year, few are cutting. Inside the IT shop, technologists cite virtualization, videoconferencing, and business intelligence most often as tools they’ll use to improve IT’s efficiency. We also asked technologists to grade their IT operations, in terms of how they’re seen by the rest of the company. They rate themselves very high on IT system quality systems and uptime, as well as controlling costs. They give themselves poor marks for driving innovation and generating revenue.
