Reaching for the clouds: A three-step journey Choices abound when enterprises begin to explore a cloud computing strategy. Private, public, or hybrid? Adapt an existing IT infrastructure or create a new one? At the heart of the decision is a careful assessment of business and technology synergies.

“In 2012, businesses need to increase their focus on identity and privacy projects that can achieve quick time-to-value and deliver real value not just to IT, but also to the business,” said Bob Blakley, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “As organizational boundaries erode under the pressure of federation and outsourcing, and as organizations' control over IT continues to weaken through increased adoption of mobile devices and cloud services, identity management is more important than ever — and more problematic.” |

A New Approach to Social with Some Old Twists The impact of social learning tools and how they affect business is growing larger. It’s no longer a question of “if” businesses will engage in social learning, but “how” and “when”. Traditionally, organizations have wrestled with how to define social learning. Social learning can be classified as: “Any type of learning where a person learns vicariously through the observations of, or interactions with, others.” Social learning technology should enable this definition of social learning and what is now called the “Seven Cs”. Josh Bersin (Bersin & Associates) has often referred to four of them: conversation, connection, collaboration and content. While acknowledging these, there are three additional and important “Cs” in the business today: consumption, contribution and control. Read the White Paper from SumTotal Systems

IT Technologies to Watch in 2012 About this time over the past few years, I find it interesting to take a peek at what the prevailing wisdom purveyors and pundits believe the top information technologies will be over the next 12 months. Since 2009 these predictions have been pretty volatile. |

This template will help you build a Requirements Management Plan that addresses: Collection- gathering the basic needs of stakeholders; Categorization – categorizing those needs; Prioritization – prioritizing those needs and identifying “must haves;” Tracing – tracking how those needs are addressed throughout the life of the project; Change Management – the process by which we will change our requirements as needs change; and Verification – how we will verify that requirements have been met. Completing this template will give you an important communications tool, but perhaps even more importantly going through the process will clarify details in your mind that you had perhaps not previously considered. To lean more about project management, make plans to attend the IHRIM 2012 pre-conference course: IHRIM’s Essentials for Successful Project Management, on Monday, April 30 at the Hilton Chicago. Focusing on the skills, tools and techniques that project managers or project team members should know to effectively define, plan and manage projects and project assignments, this course will provide you the basics to prepare for and execute project management roles. For more information on this course and our other pre-conference courses, go to IHRIM 2012 Conference Courses. |

Wiring the open-source enterprise Social technologies lie at the core of a new model that spurs user participation and speeds up product innovation. Open innovation isn’t a new phenomenon. The first Oxford English Dictionary was an open-source project: editors solicited the participation of hundreds of amateur volunteer readers. Fascinating examples of information sharing and innovative intellectual-property arrangements can also be found in the evolution of Cornish pumping engines in the 18th century and of blast furnaces in northern England during the 19th century. Software itself was distributed free of charge during the 1950s. But open innovation has been gathering force in recent years, thanks to the emergence of the Internet as a global information-sharing network; the increasing importance of digitizable, knowledge-based products and services; and the sheer volume of data being generated, processed, and stored by a wide range of enterprises. From a beachhead in software, open innovation has spread to a range of industries that use external insights to boost internal R&D efforts or even rely on outside networks for core product ideas. |

Workforce Solutions Review - Don't miss an issue! February/March 2012 This issue will cover a variety of the latest trends and issues in HCM service delivery from a technology and organizational perspective. Planned feature articles include: Next Generation HR Service Delivery Models; Where’s the Service in SaaS?; Building an Engaging and Compliant Benefits Administration Model – To Insource or Outsource, that is the Question; The HR Business Partner, Shared Service Centers, and Centers of Excellence; HRO/BPO Today – To Be or Not to Be?; HR Service Delivery for SMB’s, and Service Level Agreements and Measuring for Success. This jam-packed issue will also include our regular complement of specialty, department articles. You won’t want to miss this new look at an “old” topic. Plus our HR Service Delivery Buyer’s Guide. April/May 2012 The market for "integrated talent management" software continues to be open to the existing players (whom are being consolidated more and more each day.) There are vendors that market end-to-end solutions that cover most of the bases to satisfy a company's "end-to-end" talent management needs. But it’s like trying to find that perfect universal remote control for your home. It turns on your TV, DVD player, stereo and all its components, the lights in your house – room by room, and your oven. But it won’t start your car and warm it up on a cold morning. This issue looks at what organizations want and need – a complete HR platform strategy that integrates the various applications: (employee and manager self-service and all the technological support that enables HR to support the workforce and lower the cost of service delivery; time and labor and all the technologies that enable our organizations to put the right person in the right place at the right time and deliver at an optimal cost; the technologies that enable us to acquire, develop and retain talent and deliver revenue and/or profit-based outcomes; the technologies that enable metrics-based management and also contribute to financial performance improvements at the enterprise level; and, social and mobile adaptations of these that are just beginning to show enterprise value)…and, no million dollar upgrades every few year. Does this fully integrated solution exist, and if not, how can companies combine the best of applications cost-effectively and drive business success? This issue of Workforce Solutions Review can be valuable to your business. Plus the Workforce Planning Buyer’s Guide.
